Cut Store, which imports premium fashion from the United States, has opened its first physical store. You’ll find it on Crown Street, Surry Hills, in a beautifully renovated four-storey terrace.
“I always dreamed of opening a store,” director Hannah Maginn, who founded Cut eight years ago, tells Broadsheet. “I fell in love with the building and felt like I finally had the opportunity to take the risk. I knew I wanted to create something unique, something with different energy and flair, something feminine and fun. I wanted people to love being there, from start to finish.”
To realise her vision, Maginn enlisted artist, designer and bar owner Michael Delany (he’s responsible for the newly refurbed Piccolo Bar, and formerly operated The Duke in Enmore and The George Waterloo). The two collaborated on a “huge renovation”, transforming the terrace’s street-level floor into a decadent but comfortable space bathed in Cut’s signature olive green, and splashed with brass, timber and pastel pinks. Bespoke curved cabinetry houses jewellery, while mirrored plinths display new stock. The change rooms – draped with oversized curtains and laid with lush carpet – are backdropped by a Matisse-inspired mural. An enormous, arched mirror tells you, “You look fucking epic” (just in case you were in any doubt).

SIGN UPThe in-store collection continues Cut’s long-term mission. “We find brands that have edge and flair; brands that care about quality and amazing craftsmanship; brands that are conscious, ethical and sustainable,” says Maginn. “We’re not trend-focused, but trans-seasonal. Our focus is on pieces for life, for people who want to curate their wardrobe consciously around staples they’ll keep forever.”
Also important is inclusivity. “Grandmothers come into the store with their daughters and granddaughters, and every person in the group gets excited by something,” says Maginn.
“There’s something for everyone, in every size. The most important thing to me is sincerity in the fashion business – removing the bullshit factor.”
That means whether you’re on your own looking for a tee just because, or shopping with family or friends for a party, you’ll likely find something to suit. Among the current collection are tees, sweaters and hoodies by Perfect White Tee; chic basics by Lacausa; bohemian dresses by Malibu’s Jen’s Pirate Booty; classic leather jackets by Austin, Texas’s Understated Leather; candles by Ukiyo; costume jewellery by Luv Aj; and loads more.
Cut receives new shipments every week and is continually expanding its relationships to bring international brands down under, so there’s always a reason to visit.
