The Man Who Fell to Earth
Surry Hills’ beautifully restored Art Deco cinema Golden Age is screening Nicolas Roeg’s cult cosmic mystery to coincide with UTS Art’s current exhibition Closed Worlds.
The surreal 1976 sci-fi, starring David Bowie in his first leading film role, is the perfect accompaniment to the interactive archive, which charts the rise of a new environmental consensus through 41 historical “closed system” prototypes – from autonomous houses to NASA’s famous planet-colonising experiments.
In the visually stunning The Man Who Fell to Earth, the original Starman, Bowie, plays Thomas Jerome Newton, an alien sent to earth in search of water to save his drought-stricken home planet. Newton uses his knowledge of advanced technology to create profitable inventions and develop a new water-transportation method (and falling in love).
