Free Public Transport on the Opal Network
In February, the NSW Government suddenly shut down Sydney’s train network for 24 hours, in response to industrial action planned by the Rail, Tram and Bus Union. The unexpected closure left thousands of commuters stranded. For months, the union and the government have been trying to reach an agreement on issues such as workplace conditions and pay; it’s led to multiple strikes. Since the shutdown, the union has threatened further industrial action should the government not offer commuters free trips as compensation for the mass closure.
That industrial action has been averted – and in good news for commuters, public transport will be free on the Opal network for 12 days in April. From April 14 to 26, trips via the Metro, trains (excluding to the airport), buses, light rail and ferries will be free in Sydney, the Blue Mountains, Central Coast, the Hunter region and the Illawarra.
From 4am on Thursday April 14 to 3.59am on Tuesday April 26.
