A spirited new production reinterprets this classic ballet – and Australian film – for the stage

For two weeks in April, The Australian Ballet presents Don Quixote – a new production based on Rudolf Nureyev and Robert Helpmann’s 1973 film (in turn based on the original ballet by Marius Petipa) which premiered at the Sydney Opera House in July 1973. A legendary dancer and choreographer, Nureyev was a guest of The Australian Ballet in the early 1970s and his performance as Basilio in Don Quixote was one of his most popular roles.

Running from Saturday 8th April to Tuesday 25th April, Don Quixote is like a painting come to life. From its colourful costumes and fantastical sets to a Spanish-tinged score written by 19th-century ballet composer Ludwig Minkus, this vibrant production is a tribute to the original text and to Nureyev’s legacy within The Australian Ballet.

Artistic Director of The Australian Ballet, David Hallberg, says: “The reinterpreted sets, brought from film to stage, show why Nureyev’s version of Don Quixote is deeply embedded in the history of this company.”Expect a stage brimming with flowers, candles and the bustling spirit of Barcelonian streets, following the story of the flirtatious barber Basilio, who wins the hand of his feisty girlfriend Kitri with the assistance of the visionary knight Don Quixote.

Equal parts athleticism, comedy and Spanish flair, Don Quixote is the perfect ballet for lovers and first timers alike.

Tickets are on sale now, starting at $52. Under 30's tickets from $46.
