Dennis Golding at Carriageworks
The Future is Here by Kamilaroi/Gamilaraay artist Dennis Golding showcases superhero capes created in collaboration with the students of Alexandria Park Community School. Made in 2020 during a Solid Ground workshop (an initiative of Carriageworks and Blacktown Arts Centre that provides education, training and employment pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth), students of all ages were invited to design their own capes, each featuring iconography informed by their experiences and cultural identity.
Curated by Kyra Kum-Sing, The Future is Here hinges on Golding’s use of superhero symbolism as a way to empower contemporary First Nation culture and free it from colonial narratives – providing critique of social, political and cultural representations of the contemporary First Nation experience.
