Affordable Art Fair 2022
Entering the art market as a rookie can be overwhelming. The price of artwork alone is often a deterrent, and traditional galleries can be intimidating for those who don’t know how to navigate them. (And if you’re a renter, do you really want to spend tens of thousands of dollars on an artwork you might never be able to actually hang from your wall?) That’s where the Affordable Art Fair comes in. Started 22 years ago, and now found in 10 cities around the world – including London, Brussels, New York and Melbourne – it aims to make buying and collecting art more accessible. And it’s coming to Sydney for the first time.
More than 35 Australian and international galleries will exhibit in the Winx Stand at Royal Randwick Racecourse. Thousands of artworks, from emerging and established artists, will be available to buy, starting at $100 and capped at $10,000. Unlike at many traditional galleries, prices will be clearly labelled and you’ll be able to take your purchases home on the day. Paintings, prints and sculptures will be available, and new works will come up for sale as others are taken.
The gallery line-up includes Sydney’s Studio Gallery, Rochfort Gallery, Harvey Galleries, Wentworth Galleries and Fern Street Gallery. Toowoomba Gallery will be down from Queensland, while artists’ collectives Femme and Petrichor will also exhibit. Manyung Gallery, Antoinette Ferwerda Gallery, Salt Contemporary Art and Art to Art will be there to represent Victoria. Five local artists under the age of 35 will also be chosen to exhibit and sell their works, and there’ll be an exhibition from Studio A, which supports artists with intellectual disabilities.
The fair will further support newbies to the art scene with guided tours showing punters the fair director’s top picks for every budget. Art Money – which offers loans to help people buy art, making the art world more approachable – will be on-site to help fund your new purchase, plus kids under 16 get free entry.
