Each Doughnut Time location is just a tiny kiosk, but they're hard to miss. Just look for the mint-green storefront and giant doughnut-shaped clock.

Or the crowds. When Doughnut Time opened its first store in Brisbane, the lines were so long the council told it to cease trading, due to worries about the number of people clogging up the footpath. While the chain's rapid expansion down the east coast has reduced the intensity of these frenzies, queues are still commonplace.

It's all down to the elaborate flavours, which change each Sunday. Doughnut Time’s hall-of-famers include the Melon DeGeneres, a watermelon-and-sour-green glaze, with chocettes and sherbert; and The Elvis, a raspberry-jam-filled doughnut with banana-and-peanut glaze and pancetta. Gluten free-options rotate too; The Snicki, with choc-and-caramel glaze and crushed peanuts, nougat and chocettes is a favourite.

At $6 each, these fried rings aren’t cheap, but that’s because each is handmade. There are some equally inventive milkshakes on offer, too.
