Panini Cnr is a dedicated sandwich shop serving up loaded made-to-order lunch rolls, house-made cakes, hot coffee and neighbourly service. Nadia Scaramella came out of retirement to open it in 2018 after struggling to find part-time hospitality work. Together she and Carmel Fazari – with occasional help from their children – turn out an impressive number of daily breakfast and lunch specials.

That includes around 100 made-to-order lunch rolls, which are the main attraction here. The classic continental roll might be lined with sliced mortadella, ham, salami and provolone cheese, while cut lettuce and rounds of tomato add crunch and sweetness. Other crowd favourites include the Carmel cutlet, a souped-up sub with crumbed chicken cutlet, lettuce, tomato and mayonnaise, and Nadia’s pick: a simple sub lined with provolone, prosciutto and artichokes. There’s a clutch of ingredients you can add to your sub, too, including prosciutto, plump bocconcini or chilli for some extra heat. The meats come from Mondo Doro and M&M Princi Butchers, while the sizeable bread rolls arrive daily from Il Panino.

There are also house-made lunches (think hearty meatballs, roasted pork and seasonal soups) and coffee, along with house-made sweets like vanilla slice, carrot cake and biscotti. While you might find a lunch-hour queue here, Scaramella and Fazari have been known to create their award-winning rolls in less than a minute. This means you’re generally guaranteed a fast and satisfying meal at Panini Cnr.
