Much-loved bakery Penny for Pound has opened a new storefront on Bridge Road, just around the corner from the original location behind Mayday.
Pastry chef Matilda Smith and partner Ben Wilson supplied croissants and bread to a steady stream of Richmond locals for four years. Then just before Christmas, they got last-minute news that Mayday was closing, and they’d have to move out.
Despite a store in Camberwell and the vast Penny for Pound HQ in Moorabbin, the suburb has a firm place in the couple’s hearts, being the site of their first public location.

SIGN UP“When we closed the doors, we didn’t know what we were doing, so we didn’t make an announcement,” Smith tells Broadsheet. “I’m sure a few people thought we were gone for good, so it was nice to let people know we were coming back. It feels like coming home.”
With the signature Penny for Pound pink-and-green branding and jaunty golden crown in place, not only is the new venue bigger, but Smith and Wilson have expanded the takeaway and dine-in offerings.
In addition to seven types of sourdough and Smith’s croissants and glistening danishes, they now have an espresso machine and a larger menu including toasted sandwiches, salads, and pork, fennel and apple sausage rolls. Boeuf bourguignon pies are also baked on-site, along with a vegetarian counterpart featuring chipotle, beans and Monterey Jack cheese.
Plain buttery croissants are baked four times a day, so if you time it right, you can have one warm from the oven. If you’re up for something a little more decadent, opt for a twice-baked red velvet croissant, a marzipan-glazed pecan croissant or a passionfruit and cacao nib doughnut. The team’s also selling carrot cake and twice-baked chocolate cake by the slice, and three varieties of hot cross bun: traditional fruit, sticky date and chocolate.
