Tastes of Rutherglen
Designated drivers get free entry to the festival, but let’s be honest, you should really leave the car at home. After all, there are 19 different wineries to visit over the weekend and shuttle buses to take you to them.
A $20 ticket gets you a tasting glass and entry to the participating wineries, where there’ll be plenty of vino to try, and for an extra $27 a shuttle can take you around. You can settle in for lunch at a number of different wineries, but if you'd prefer to pack your own, the Rutherglen Farmers Market is a good place to stop off for supplies on the way in.
Various wineries are putting on special events, too. At Cofield Wines, winemakers will guide visitors through the properties of different grape varietals to create their own vino, which can be bottled and taken home at the end of the class. Muscat Mixology at Morris Wines will teach visitors how to use muscat in a variety of cocktails (for example, adding depth to an Espresso Martini). And tickets to A Night on the Red at Buller Wines will get you a four-course meal soundtracked by the Beatles and Johnny Cash covers bands.
To make a weekend of it, check out Circa 1936, a luxury hotel and day spa in town, or book into one of the many campsites nearby.
