When it comes to dining in Sydney, new takes on traditional food are common; Sydneysiders enjoy being on the cusp of the latest trends. However, with the opening of Ko & Co in Surry Hills, Jae Jung and Frank Lin have taken the art of putting a new twist on food to a whole other level.

Jung and Lin recently spent time in Southern California, enjoying the food-truck scene. When They got back to Sydney they waited patiently for the street food trend to take over.

“We kept waiting and waiting,” says Lin, “but no one opened anything like they had in SoCal, so we did.”

At first mention, Korean-Mexican may raise more eyebrows than eager forks, but after a closer look at the menu diners will find Korean favourites, packaged neatly in Mexican wrapping. The menu reads like your favourite Mexican restaurant; tacos, burritos and quesadillas to name a few, but dig deeper and you’ll find fillings of Korean-style BBQ meats, kimchi and Korean cabbage coleslaw. There is also fried chicken and sliders for diners who are hesitant to mix kimchi and cheese in a toasty quesadilla.

The Korean liquor, Soju, makes a bold appearance on the cocktail menu, mixed with a selection of seasonal, fresh fruit juices. The remainder of the bar menu offers classic cocktails shaken with Korean inspiration.

Ko & Co always uses seasonal ingredients, so diners will be delighted with ever-evolving specials based on what’s freshest on the day.

On opening in Surry Hills, Jung smiles as he says, “There is a lot of camaraderie in the industry, there are a lot of small bars around here and we think we’ve found the right spot to introduce something new.”
